A woman is sexually assaulted every two minutes. In Colorado Springs, one in three women will experience sexual assault or domestic violence in their lifetime. The number of cases of child abuse is on the rise in Colorado.
When a victim arrives at Memorial Hospital Downtown, they meet with a Forensic Nurse who does a complete exam, collects evidence, and ensures the patient has access to the services they need.
Many victims end up giving up their clothing and shoes during the evidence process. The nurses often don’t have shoes to give them, meaning the patient leaves barefoot.
It’s such a small thing - a pair of new shoes. But for a survivor of violence - it can be a small comfort and the restoration of dignity in the start of their process towards healing.
